It Is an Honor to Know and Share the Wisdom of God
Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing true wisdom to me in Your Word. Thank You for working in my heart the faith to believe this wisdom. Teach me, strengthen me to be a faithful servant in Your kingdom and to eagerly share what You have led me to know. Bless all who gather for worship today, nourish our faith, strengthen our hearts. Amen.
How do we use our tongue? Do we use it to bless the Lord, or do we use it to curse our neighbors? As children of God we ought to use our tongues to glorify our Father in Heaven. He wants us to use our tongues to tell the truth that He gave us through Jesus Christ. So, let us use our tongues in a God-pleasing way of speaking and spreading the truth.
Jesus, while in the region of Decapolis, receives a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment. We know Jesus is full of compassion and the great Healer. He opens the ears and releases the tongue of the man giving him the ability to hear and to speak. What do the witnesses of this do? Even though Jesus charged them not to speak of this, they zealously proclaimed it. How do we proclaim the mighty works of our Lord in our lives?
Text:1 Corinthians 2:9-16
But, as it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him"- 10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. 14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 16 "For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ.
It is an honor to know and share the wisdom of God
1. By nature man does not know or accept this wisdom
2. The Spirit of God alone reveals that wisdom to man
Dear fellow redeemed:
Are you wise or a fool? People say experience is the father of wisdom. This is human wisdom. There are many scholars with higher educational degrees; in our conversation we say they are wise. If we need counseling on different matters like financial or engineering or any kind of new business issues,we would consult an intellectual person who has much knowledge and experience about the thing that you need. There are learned men and most of them only have human wisdom. There are two kinds of wisdom: 1) the wisdom of God and 2) the wisdom of man
The wisdom of God is way beyond human understanding. The wisdom of God includes the act of God’s eternal thought planning a future with great glory for His people. Therefore, God sent His only son to the world to pay the price of the sins of human beings. Jesus went through the difficult situations; He was humble and hated and wounded for our sins, but as verse 8 of the chapter we are considering today says, “Christ is the Lord of Glory!”
Those who love Christ are despised and are ignored by the people and they may suffer badly, but they are the offspring of glory. The Bible calls Christ “the wisdom of God,” in 1 Corinthians 1:24: “...but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.”
The wisdom of God is given to us, so it is an honor to know and share it. However, by nature mankind does not know or accept this wisdom, but the Spirit of God alone reveals that wisdom to mankind.
Let us think about a person who is well educated, considered wise, and not a Christian. What would he say about the subjects like: the creation of earth, animals, human beings, the Creator, etc?
This highly educated person having a couple of PhDs might say that the earth was formed accidently billions years ago. He would say that the living things that are today were developed from a single cell microorganism. He would also say that human beings are a developed version of apes. He would also say that everything is evolved, and he would advocate for the evolution theory. Some of these people do not believe in the existence of God and would say that there is no God. They make fun of the people who believe in God. They think that all of this is a foolish thing but God says they are the foolish ones. Psalm 14:11 says, “Afool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’" This natural man does not believe the truth because it is foolishness to him. The wisdom of man is based on experiments, facts, evidences, proofs, etc. However, the wisdom of God is based on faith. Therefore, God says that the wisdom of the world is folly. In 1 Corinthians 3:19a God says, “For the wisdom of this world is folly with God.”
As we read in verse 14 the natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God. Man thinks it is a foolish thing. Man in his own sight seems wise but could not answer the questions like: “Why do I make mistakes? What is sin and guilt? Why are there always war and crime in the world? Why does death reign? Who is God? As we read the Word of God we know the answers to these questions.
In the beginning God created the world with His wisdom. The world was perfect when it was created. The first human beings disobeyed God. They “missed the mark” by not obeying God’s will. The Word of God says missing the mark is sin.
God with His wisdom made Laws so that man might keep them and live. But not a single person can keep the Commandments. As an example, we read in our Epistle reading, “the tongue is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.”
We all have tongues, so let us think how your tongue works. Does your tongue ever speak evil or lie? Lying and speaking evil are sin and bring the consequences of sin. The Eighth Commandment says you shall not lie. This sin condemns us to the eternal punishment in hell as does every other sin we commit.
You and I along with all human beings on earth deserve this eternal punishment. Nevertheless, our God is loving and gracious, therefore,He wanted to save human beings. Therefore, through His wisdom He made a plan to save human beings. God the Father sent His Son Jesus into the world. The Son would come to the world and live a human life, even though He is divine. He came into the world and then He suffered and He was humiliated for the transgressions of men. Finally, the Jews crucified Him. The third day He rose again and ascended into heaven. Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. This is the thought of God,but man doesn’t believe this truth.
In verse 9 Paul writes that "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him". God prepares things differently that are unimaginable to man like the work of salvation through Jesus Christ.
We see in verse 11 “For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him?” Well, this is correct, isn’t it? We all have different thoughts in our minds. We are limited to knowing the things that are in our minds. You never know what is in your friend’s mind unless he tells you. As he tells you, you know the things. Similarly, with God,even though He tells His thoughts to the non-believers, they are not able to understand. The reason they do not understand is because of sin. To understand or discern the wisdom of God the Spirit of God is essential.
For the believers it is an honor to know and share the wisdom of God, but the nature of man opposes or resists the wisdom of God. The Holy Spirit wants to enter into the hearts of men and He wants to give them the understanding of the thoughts of God. The thoughts of God are to do well to the people and to give them life. However, due to their human nature they do not know it and they do not accept it.
However, the Spirit of God reveals Godly wisdom to those who are spiritual or, in other words, those who have faith in Jesus so that they could know the wisdom of God and share that wisdom of God with others.
Do you believe that God created all things in six days even though there are many smart and so-called wise people out there who say that it all happened only by chance? I hope you would rather believe the creation account of God. The wisdom of God is given to us so that we believe those things that others do not believe. We trust God and we rely on Him. Only the Spirit of God reveals that wisdom of God to men. We know that man by nature cannot understand and believe the thoughts of God. We see in verse 10 that the wisdom of God is revealed to us, the children of faith. “These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.” We know the thoughts of God because God tells it to us and with the faith that He creates in us we can grasp it. Now we know and confess that we believe in the true God. We believe that one day we will be with Him in the heavenly glory forever.
Verse 12 says that we have received and understand the things of God through the Spirit. “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.” The Spirit of God in us enables us to understand the things that are from God. The things that we receive from God create faith in us and build and strengthen our spiritual life so that we can know more and more of His wisdom and His thoughts.
When we talk about the Means of Grace in the sacraments that is another thing that the human mind cannot comprehend. We believe and say that the real presence of our Lord’s body and blood is in Holy Communion, but no one can see it,but still we believe it. Another instance is Holy Baptism. No one sees anything except water and hears the Word of God and we believe that through these Means of Grace we receive forgiveness of sins. This is foolishness to the world but it is wisdom to God. We believe these things because God says it.
As we see in verse 13 we impart and interpret these things taught by the Spirit to the spiritual ones. “And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.” We speak these teachings of God that show His thoughtfulness to the ones who believe. We have Bible classes and fellowships and visitations, counseling, etc. We have devotions and prayers that we do among the spiritual ones who believe in the Lord. We also tell the Gospel to the ones who do not believe so that some day they can believe and glorify our Lord.
As we read in our Gospel reading, while Jesus was in the region of Decapolis He received a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment. Jesus opened the ears and released the tongue of the man. Jesus gave him the ability to hear and speak. What did he do? Even though Jesus charged him not to tell the things, he zealously proclaimed it. We have the great news for the people, therefore we should not stop telling and sharing the truth--the Gospel that saves people.
Some of the modes that we use to share the Gospel are personal evangelism, group evangelism, booklets, television broadcast, radio programs and websites. We tell people to come to the church and hear the saving message of our God and get the wisdom of God. You and I preach or share the Gospel through our words, actions, and deeds.
According to verse 15 a spiritual person is able to distinguish the things that are right and the things that are wrong. “The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one.”
As the Spirit of God works and lives in us, He gives us the ability tochoose the right things. The Spirit of God helps us to do right but, on the other hand the ones who do not believe do wrong because they do not have the wisdom to distinguish the truth. God gives His children the proper knowledge and insight. God also gives us the mind of the Lord as verse 16 tells us in our text. “But we have the mind of Christ.”
If we have mind of the Lord we can understand the thoughts of God. The Spirit of God reveals the true wisdom of God to you and you can comprehend it because the Holy Spirit helps you to understand. The Spirit from God helps the believers to tell the messages that are from God to others who do not know it.
There is a difference between natural man and spiritual man. According to the Word of God the natural man is dead in spirit. He might have a living physical body but he does not have the spiritual life. In other words, he is foolish. He is not able to receive the thoughts of God or the wisdom of God. You and I know that the wisdom of God is the eternal thought of God planning a future for His people with great glory. The person who is born in spirit is made able by the Spirit to understand the secrets of God and also to proclaim the hidden wisdom to others who do not know.
The Spirit helps you and me to proclaim the good news to those billions of unreached people. Therefore, let us be led by the Spirit, exercise our honor to share the saving wisdom of God to the people who do not know and who do not accept the wisdom of God by their nature. May the Spirit strengthen you and help you to do it. Amen!
