Pre-Service Prayer:

Heavenly Father, when I take the time to listen to Your Word and consider my life in its light, I know how weak I am to stand against temptation. When I listen to Your Word I am filled with joy in my salvation and I want to flee temptation and stay far away from sin out of love for You. My problem is that I don’t always listen. I am so frequently going at “the speed of life” that I fail to stop and listen to the still small voice of Your Word. Forgive my inattentiveness to Your Word and my over-attention to the world. I am in Your house today to hear and to listen—bless me and my fellow worshippers through Your Word. Amen.

Pre-Service Devotion:

Psalm 125

First Reading:

Proverbs 16:1-10

Each day of a sinner’s life provides many circumstances that are ripe for temptation. How do I approach my day? Am I proud or humble? Will I rely on my own wits or God’s Word? Will I be pulled into loving the world? Will I force my plans into my life or humbly submit to God’s will? The inspired wisdom of King Solomon provides counsel in these areas and more.

Second Reading:

Luke 4:1-13

Just as the Old Testament people of Israel provide example and admonition concerning falling into temptation (cf. sermon text), so Jesus provides example and encouragement in facing temptation and being victorious over it. The Devil is always looking for the “opportune time.” God’s Word will always defeat him.
