Pre-Service Prayer:

God of all comfort, my loving heavenly Father, hear my prayer. Great are my needs. When I am agitated and troubled, grant me the comfort of peace. When I am angry, crabby, short-tempered, and upset, grant me the comfort of repentance for that sin and the calm that comes from trusting You rather than reacting selfishly and with pride. When I am worried or afraid, grant me the comfort of courage and confidence in You. When I am weak, give me the comfort of strength. When I am lonely, give me the comfort of Your abiding presence. When I am sad and grieving, give me the comfort of cheer and joy. When I am in any need, grant me the comfort that is best suited for me and which flows from Your grace and wisdom. When I am comforted, move me to share that comfort with others. Be with me in worship today. Hear my prayers, accept my praises, and minister to my sin-wearied soul. Amen.

Pre-Service Devotion:

Psalm 65

First Reading:

Isaiah 51:12-16

All genuine comfort comes from the LORD—the one and only God. He is your Maker with the power and knowledge to help. He is your Protector and Provider. He is your Savior and Deliverer.

Second Reading:

John 8:31-45

Jesus’ Truth set us free! We are free from sin and its condemnation. We are free from enslavement to sin and serving it. Thus saved from sin we are able to find and possess comfort in every earthly circumstance. This comfort flows from the same Truth, the same Jesus, who has redeemed us.
