Christmas Anticipation: Opening the Gifts
Jesus, lead me on till my rest is won
And although the way be cheerless,
Let me follow calm and fearless,
Guide me by Your hand, to my fatherland.
When I seek relief from a long-felt grief,
When temptations come alluring,
Make me patient and enduring.
Show me that bright shore, where I’ll weep no more.
Jesus, lead me on, till my rest is won.
Heavenly Leader, still direct me,
Still support, console, protect me,
Till I safely stand in my fatherland. Amen. [cf. TLH 410]
Elijah had fallen into the temptation of doing the opposite of what today’s sermon text encourages. Elijah had cast away his confidence, he had no more endurance, and he had lost his patience. God corrected Elijah’s thinking and strengthened him with His Word.
Readiness—faithful servants are always at the ready when their master calls. So too, we do well to always be ready for Jesus’ return. Cast off the temptations of lethargy, indifference, and carelessness. Replace them all with readiness.
