Pre-Service Prayer:

Come, O long expected Jesus, born to set Your people free;
From my sins and fears release me, by Your death on Calvary.
By Your own eternal Spirit, rule, Lord,  in my heart alone;
By Your all-sufficient merity raise me to Your glorious throne. Amen.
(cf. WS 2000 #705)

Pre-Service Devotion:

Psalm 24

First Reading:

Romans 13:11-14

Each day we live brings us one day closer to glory. Each day the earth exists brings it one day closer to destruction. For this reason, now is not the time to be sleepy and inactive. Rather, it is time to actively prepare. For our own well-being and for our credibility as Jesus’ witnesses, now is the time to put off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.

Second Reading:

Luke 4:16-22

While visiting His hometown, Jesus was invited to preach in the local synagogue. For His text, Jesus read a verse from Isaiah which foretold of the Messiah. Jesus began His sermon by identifying Himself as the Messiah and declaring that His preaching was fulfilling Isaiah’s prophesy. The hometown crowd was none too pleased with what they heard and tried to kill Jesus, but Jesus’ ministry was not yet complete so they were not successful.
