The LORD—He Is God!
Lord God, there is so much for which I rightly can give You praise and thanks: from Your wisdom and power evident in creation and Your preservation of it, to Your grace in providing salvation for us sinners, to the power of Your Word working saving faith in my heart and to its ongoing power in daily strengthening and keeping me in the true faith. You alone are God, and You alone are worthy of my greatest affections and deepest love. Forgive my failures in letting other things rise higher than You in my life. Bless my worship today so that I may grow in faith, and You will be glorified. Amen.
Power impresses. God showed His sheer power when He created all things and when He sent fire to burn up Elijah’s offering (cf. sermon text). But the fact that God has brought the light of salvation into our hearts is no less impressive. God does reveal His greatness through powerful demonstrations, but also through His work of salvation.
Jesus showed who He is and what He can do by His miracles, but also through His preaching. As Jesus proclaimed the powerful Word of God the people took note and realized its power. Building our lives on that powerful Word of God assures our perseverance and eternal blessing.
