Hymns: 190:1,3-6; 215; 332; 227; 196
Pre-Service Prayer:

O Lord God, our dear Savior: We come before Your presence to hear Your holy Word. Send Your Holy Spirit to help us ever to treasure that Word—to listen attentively to it, to grow in our understanding of it, and to strive to apply it faithfully in our lives. When we are tempted to turn away from Your Word, correct us. When we have an opportunity to share Your Word, inspire us. Sanctify our hearts and lives as we listen this day. Amen.

Pre-Service Devotion:

Psalm 66

First Reading:

Jeremiah 29:1, Jeremiah 29:4-14, 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17

God punished His Old Testament people for their unfaithfulness by sending them into captivity in Babylon. However, He did not forget or forsake them. In this reading God informs His people of His plans for their future after their captivity--plans to bless them with peace and with hope.

The apostle Paul encourages the Thessalonians in the midst of their trials to stand fast and hold to the teachings of the Bible. Those teachings were used by the Holy Spirit to sanctify them, and in those teachings they would find comfort and hope.

Second Reading:

John 16:5-15

Jesus sent the Holy Spirit after His ascension into heaven to help His disciples of all ages. The Holy Spirit works in us through the Scriptures, so that He might guide us into all truth. By believing, upholding, and proclaiming that truth we glorify our Savior and remain His faithful followers.
