Pre-Service Prayer:

Lord Jesus keep me from growing weary in waiting for You to return. Do not let me fall into a careless attitude concerning my soul, nor a procrastinating heart toward Your Word, nor a spiritual lethargy in my day to day living. Invigorate me with the joy of my salvation and keep me ever watchful, ever ready, ever eager for Your return. Amen.

Pre-Service Devotion:

Psalm 45

First Reading:

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

Paul reminded the Thessalonians that Jesus’ return will come suddenly and without warning. It will come as a fearful surprise to those who are not believers in Christ. Though Jesus’ return will come just as suddenly for children of God, they will be ready and will greet Him with joy. Beware, lest you grow "sleepy" in your spiritual watchfulness. Rather, be strengthened in your salvation through the Gospel…watch…wait…edify and comfort one another while you wait.

Second Reading:

Matthew 24:36-51

These words of Jesus immediately precede His parable in the sermon text, and are the basis for Paul’s words to the Thessalonians. Jesus’ return will come on an ordinary day while everyone is going about their usual daily activities. While on the earth we are God’s servants and stewards of His gifts. The wise servant is he who works faithfully even when the master is away. He will be blessed when the master returns.
