Hymns: 39; “O Lord, Our God, Your Gracious Hand;” 442; 788; 400
Pre-Service Prayer:

O God of mercy, God of might, in love and pity infinite,
Teach us, as ever in Thy sight to live our life to Thee.

And Thou, who cam’st on earth to die that fallen man might live thereby,
Oh, hear us; for to Thee we cry, in hope, O Lord, to Thee.

And may Thy Holy Spirit move all those who give to give in love
Till Thou shalt greet in heaven above all those who live to Thee. [TLH #439, st. 1,2,6]

Pre-Service Devotion:

Psalm 73

First Reading:

1 Kings 17:8-16

The widow of Zarephath could have given many “reasonable" excuses to explain why she should not use her last food for the stranger at her door. She could have many “reasons" to fear for her future once she gave away all of her food. Instead, the widow relied on God’s grace and gave from the gifts God gave her to serve Him.

Second Reading:

1 Peter 4:1-10

Christ willingly gave Himself for us out of grace—His love for fallen sinners. Christ’s love moves us to respond to His love with love for Him. We demonstrate love for Christ by not "running with the world" contrary to God’s will, by showing Christian love to one another, and by using all the gifts God graciously gives us to His glory.
