“A Word of Truth” from Immanuel Lutheran Church of Mankato…

Why Should We Pray?

A Word of Truth #184

“God, I’m in a real tough spot, so I thought I’d come and ask you for help.” At times praying to God is reduced to asking for things and only as a last hope when all other options have failed. God does want us “call upon [Him] in the day of trouble” (Psalm 50:15). God wants us to bring the desires of our heart to Him. Jesus said, “Keep ask and it will be given to you, keep seeking and you will find…” (Matthew 7:7). However, our need is only one reason to pray.

Prayer is talking to God. We have every reason to talk to God: to tell Him how wonderful He is, praise Him for the greatness of His power, wisdom, and grace, and to give Him thanks. “Oh, give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His mercy endures forever!” (Psalm 107:1).

From the “God, thank You for a wonderful day!” to the “God help me!” Talk to Him—pray without ceasing.

For What Should We Pray?

A Word of Truth #185

The apostle Paul once wrote his fellow Christians, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6). God sets few limits on His children when it comes to content of their prayers. Believers are to feel free to speak to God about anyone, or anything, at any time, and under all circumstances. Do you have concerns or requests regarding your own personal needs? Take them to the Lord in prayer. Are your relatives or friends facing crises at this time? Take them to the Lord in prayer. Are you concerned about our country or fearful for the safety of our military personnel? Take these matters to the Lord in prayer. Has the Lord bless you in some special way. Remember always to thank the Lord in prayer.
