A Word of Truth #178
Baptism is a gift that God has given to us for the forgiveness of sins. We are unable to see God forgiving sins through Baptism, but we know that He does so because of His sure Word and promise.
In addition to actually forgiving sins, Baptism is also a visual aid to remind us of the forgiveness of sins. Just as water cleanses from dirt, so Baptism washes away sin. Just as water can drown, so Baptism drowns the old sinful flesh that lives within each one of us and creates a new man who loves to serve God.
Those who are baptized have the reminder that they have been redeemed by Christ, that God has made them His children, and that they are enabled by God to live their lives for Him. “Therefore we were buried with [Christ] by baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4).

Keys play an important role in our lives. They open doors to our homes, our automobiles, and our offices. Keys allow us to do the work we are called to do. The office of the keys is important to the Christian church, for it enables Christians to do the work they have been called to do. The office of the keys is that special power Christ gave to His followers on earth to forgive the sins of penitent sinners and to retain the sins of the impenitent. Jesus speaks of this vital spiritual work, when He addresses His disciples and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” By using the office of the keys carefully and faithfully the church can comfort those sorrowing over sin and call bold sinners to repentance.
