“A Word of Truth” from Immanuel Lutheran Church of Mankato…

Jesus was and remains the Great High Priest

A Word of Truth #138

In the Old Testament, the priests were the mediators between God and the people. The priests offered sacrifices to God for the sins of the people and they brought the people’s prayers to God.

God anointed Jesus Christ to be our priest. While on the earth, Jesus offered a sacrifice for the sins of all people – Himself. The Old Testament priests offered animals as pictures of what Jesus would do. Jesus was the priest and the sacrifice laying down His life and shedding His blood for the forgiveness of our sins.

Jesus’ sacrifice was once for all. The work of redemption is complete. There is no more need for Him to be sacrificed. However, He is still active as our priest. Jesus serves us as our priest when He prays for us. Jesus goes before the Father interceding on our behalf. Paul writes, “It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us” (Romans 8:34).

Jesus is our King

A Word of Truth #139

Here in America we don’t have much time for kings. Oh, yes, we speak of prom kings and we may play “king on the hill,” but we elect Presidents, we don’t bow before kings. Yet, every true Christian, whether Democrat, Republican, or Independent acknowledges Jesus as King.

The Bible reveals Jesus to be a king unlike any other. He is a King bearing witness to the truths of His heavenly Father (John 18:37) and bestowing upon all who believe in Him the gifts of “righteousness…peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17). Jesus is a King who doesn’t sit on a physical throne, but rather rules from within the hearts of His believing children, guiding their words and actions, protecting them from every evil, and preserving them unto His heavenly kingdom (2 Timothy 4:18). Jesus is our King! Jesus wants to be your King!
