Our Relationship with Government—A Biblical View

A Word of Truth #013

What does God say about our relationship with government? He tells us in the Bible that we are to honor and respect the government, for “the authorities that exist have been established by God” (Romans 13:1 NIV). He goes on to say that we are to obey the law, to pay required taxes, and to honor those holding public office as they faithfully carry out their duties. This was said regarding the Roman government at that time, which was very corrupt and persecuted Christians! It certainly applies to our relationship with government today.

God also tells us that should our government approve wrongdoing or pass laws contrary to God’s will as expressed in His Word, we must “obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29).

Still a Christian who serves faithfully in government, or who works to correct wrongdoing by legal means, certainly serves his country and glorifies God.

Saved to Serve

A Word of Truth #014

“Why did I live while my friend died?” Frequently, survivors question why their lives were spared and others were lost. Usually, the conclusion is that a life was spared because of a purpose yet to fulfill.

Each of us has been dramatically saved from a tragic end. Jesus saved us from our sin and eternal death when He died on the cross. Why should Jesus die, and we who sin, live?

God’s undeserved love is the answer and that love gives purpose to our lives. We are SAVED from eternal damnation, to SERVE our Lord and Savior. “Christ died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again” (2 Corinthians 5:15).

Jesus redeemed you for a purpose. That purpose is to serve God in everything and to declare His love and salvation to the world. Thus, you need never ask the question: “Why am I here?” for you were SAVED TO SERVE.
