Jesus: The Gift Bursting with More Gifts!
Lord Jesus, in these days, our hearts overflow with joy as we call to mind Your birth which brought salvation to us sinners. As we prepare and celebrate this week, grant that the joy created by Your birth may not be quenched in our hearts, but that it may continue to burn and give us strength to overcome all doubts and temptations to sin and to bear our cross cheerfully. Fill the hearts of all members of our congregation with true Christmas joy, help us to add to the joy of others, and finally bring us all to that joy which no one can take away from us—the joy of life everlasting. Amen. [adapted from a prayer of C.F.W. Walther]
Our final “Advent Song” is a song of the Church—the children of God rejoicing and proclaiming the salvation accomplished by the long-promised Messiah.
The angel, Gabriel, told Zacharias that his son, John, would prepare the hearts of the people for the Messiah. When John began his ministry, he declared the same thing and connected himself to the Old Testament promises about the Savior’s forerunner. John’s role was to point to Christ—the gift of Christmas.
