Pre-Service Prayer:

Dear Jesus, You first loved me when I was unlovable. You have shown me what genuine, sacrificial, purposeful love is. Move me to love You and others with genuine love. Teach me to see others as souls redeemed by Your blood, and then to have a genuine soul-concern and compassion for them. Teach my heart humility that esteems others and rejoices in their joy, not only my own, and that seeks to aid others in their sorrow. Let my humble-love for others be a light of witness to Your greater love and salvation. Amen.

Pre-Service Devotion:

Psalm 119:1-8

First Reading:

Proverbs 25:6-7

King Solomon gives wise counsel regarding humility.

Second Reading:

Luke 14:1,7-14

Jesus teaches the same wisdom concerning humility as Solomon (cf. Old Testament reading). Jesus made use of a parable that is based on Solomon’s inspired words. The apostle Paul echoed the same truth when he told the Romans “not to think more highly of oneself than he ought to think, but to think soberly” (Romans 12:3).
